As water saving irrigation is being adopted in large scale in Asia and other regions, it is worth to exam consequent environmental implications to ensure its sustainable development.
The International Forum on Water Resources Management and Irrigation Modernization was co-organized by FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and Shanxi Provincial Government in Taiyuan and Yuncheng Cities, Shanxi Province, China, 22-24 November 2006.
Irrigation plays a key role in global and regional agriculture development and food security. Rapid socio-economic development in Asia in the past decades brought new challenges and opportunities to irrigation sector, with large rice-based irrigation systems in Southeast Asia mostly affected.

FAO has been assisting the Mekong River Commission, since 2006, by providing capacity building and support to use the Rapid Appraisal Procedure (RAP) for an initial assessment of irrigation scheme performance in four pilot projects in the MRC member countries, in the context of the"Improvement of Irrigation Efficeincy on Paddy Fields in the Lower Mekong Basin (IIEPF)" project, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. MRC has published the Report on the RAP Training Workshop and Initial Assessment of Irrigation Scheme Performance. The report can be consulted online on the MRC's website, at the following address: http://www.mrcmekong.org/programmes/AIFP/publications.htm .
